Earning Scouting’s top award is a challenge.

Earning it during a pandemic is even more challenging.

Being rewarded with a college scholarship during a pandemic made it all worthwhile.

In 2021, eight exceptional high school seniors from across the country, who fulfilled the scholarship requirements for the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship received well-deserved college scholarships totaling $22,000.

The requirements for the scholarship are significant, and these fine young Catholic men and women achieved them. Each recipient demonstrated outstanding leadership and service in four areas: Church, Community, School and Scouting. Each of them earned the Eagle, Summit, or Quartermaster award, and each completed requirements for at least one of the following religious emblems: Ad Altare Dei, Pope Pius XII, or Light is Life (Eastern Rite) Religious Emblem.

Congratulations to the 2021 Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship recipients:

  • Fox Melo from St. Finbar Catholic Church, Burbank, CA, Archdiocese of Los Angeles – $5,000
  • Joshua Royal from St. Stephen the Martyr Catholic Church, Omaha, NE, Archdiocese of Omaha – $4,000
  • Elaine Smith from St. Margaret of Cortona Catholic Church, Columbus, OH, Diocese of Columbus – $3,000
  • David Hoyt from Christ the King Catholic Church, Jacksonville, FL, Diocese of St. Augustine – $2,000
  • Isaac Caron from Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Faribault, MN, Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis – $2,000
  • Joseph Bowers from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Silver Creek, NY, Diocese of Buffalo – $2,000
  • Julia Amendola from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, West Nyack, NY, Archdiocese of New York – $2,000
  • Logan Goodbred from St. Anne Catholic Church, Oswego, IL, Diocese of Joliet – $2,000

In addition to the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarships, there are two new scholarships in 2022: the $2,000 Bill and Kay Davies Scholarship and the $3,000 NCCS Francis Parater Scholarship. Applicants only need to complete one application to be automatically considered for all the scholarships.

Since 2005, 89 Catholic Scouts have been awarded a total of $193,000 in college scholarships.
