Celebrating Scout Sunday at a Minnesota parish

Scouts celebrate Scout Sunday at St. Odilia parish in Shoreview, Minnesota, as Scouts do at many Catholic parishes throughout the country.

At St. Odilia, Scouts served as altar servers, gift bearers, greeters, and ushers on February 4. A Scout carrying a cross led a procession of 30-plus uniformed Scouts and Scout leaders into the 11 a.m. Mass with the pastor. A Scout leader served as lector during Mass. And Scouts served coffee and donuts after the 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Masses.

“As Scout leaders, we are happy that the Scouts and leaders can participate in the Mass and provide service on Scout Sunday,” said Mary Lillemo, Charter Organization Representative for the St. Odilia Scout Pack, Troops and Crew. “This provides an outward sign to everyone that the parish and the Scout units are partners in the Scouting mission: to help create future leaders of good character with a spirit of servant leadership.”

Scouts of all ages at St. Odilia serve the parish community in many ways. They help out with parish events, like the fall festival, pancake breakfasts, the annual parish musical production and much more. They also help with landscaping and gardening projects and provide the people power needed by the parish whenever they are able. The spirit of servant leadership – jumping in to help when and where they are needed – is a central tenet of Scouting. Helping fellow parishioners and community members as Christ calls us to do is a quality very much recognized and appreciated by parish leadership.

“I have always appreciated the character and virtues and fun that can be shared through the Scouts in a Faith-based way,” said Father James Peterson, pastor of St. Odilia parish. “Some of the most shining examples of leadership that I have witnessed in my life are from those who have integrated the values of Scouting in their own lives.”

The BSA designates the Sunday that falls before February 8 (Scouting Anniversary Day) as Scout Sunday. How does your local Pack, Troop, Crew or Ship mark this special day? We’d love to hear from you and see pictures! Share your Scout Sunday photos on Facebook, Instagram or other social media and use the hashtag #ScoutSunday!
